POD Design is a professional landscape architecture, planning, and urban design firm that creates sensible environments in which people live, work, and play.  POD Design has created numerous unique and high-quality engaging outdoor play environments for children of all abilities.  With offices in Columbus, Cincinnati, Shanghai, we have completed exciting natural play settings for discovery, adventure and reflection; places that inspire the imagination, stimulate the senses and forge a collaborative design process with children, parents, educators and professionals.

Within many of our designs, we combine the best of both worlds by carefully integrating selected manufactured components with natural features of landforms, pathways, plants, water, boulders, sand, dirt and more.  Additionally, POD Design’s involvement with the fellowship program of Natural Learning Initiative and expanded training in therapeutic gardening and environmental education continues to reinforce our practice and belief that as designers, we have the ability to positively impact generations of children and adults through contact with nature.

Some nature-related or recreational projects that POD Design has recently completed or are in-progress includes:

  • NaturePlay@BCM, Behringer-Crawford Museum at Devou Park, Covington, KY
  • Owen’s Place Treehouse – Beavercreek Township, Ohio
  • The Woodlands Garden – Franklin County Metro Parks
  • Millstone Creek Park – Westerville, Ohio
  • Community Park – Mayfield Heights, Ohio
  • Pinnacle Park – Grove City, Ohio
  • Coffman Park Playground – Dublin, Ohio

The majority of Jim’s 20 years of professional experience lies within the parks and recreation arena.  From large scale system-wide master plans, inclusive playscapes and nature-based play environments to mini pocket parks less than half an acre in size, Jim understands the role that open space plays within the fabric of the community, regardless of size. His greatest professional experience lies within a project’s initial design, needs assessment, and consensus building phases.  Jim is skilled at facilitating the discussions of project stakeholders – particularly those from disparate points of view – and engaging meaningful participation that results in an overall successful outcome.  As a gifted presenter, Jim is skilled at providing the information necessary to ensure an informed public input process.
